Alright, so, I was looking for a decent watch, and let me tell you, the world of high-end watches is something else. I’ve always liked the Rolex GMT-Master II, especially that left-handed version. But man, the real deal? Way out of my budget. So, I started looking at, well, let’s call them “homages.”

I started digging around online. Forums, watch blogs, you name it. I kept seeing this “Ocean 39 Vintage GMT Premium Ceramic” pop up. It’s apparently got a Swiss automatic movement and a 39mm case size. Sounds pretty good, right?

Then I went down a rabbit hole about how the original GMT Master’s hands are set up. Turns out it’s seconds, minutes, hour, then GMT. This “homage” I was looking at uses a modified A2836 movement, and apparently it’s set up the same way, like the old 1675 model. For the GMT Master II, though. It’s all very confusing.

  • One thing I learned is that spotting a fake Rolex is serious business. You gotta check the case for a serial number and look at how the bezel rotates and the colors and stuff.
  • Also, the real GMT-Master is super limited. I read somewhere that Rolex only makes like 88,500 of them a year, and only about 54,000 are the stainless steel ones. Crazy, right? The ones I like have a 40mm case, are 11.90mm thick, and about 48mm lug-to-lug.

Then I stumbled on this discontinued Rolex, the 116718LN, it’s called. Yellow gold case, black ceramic bezel, and a green dial. I figured since it was not made anymore, maybe I could get a good deal on one, But, Nope! Still crazy expensive.

So, after all that research, I decided to take the plunge and ordered one of these “homage” watches. I’ll let you know how it goes when it arrives. Hopefully, it scratches that GMT-Master II itch without breaking the bank!
