Okay, let’s talk about this watch project I’ve been messing around with. I’ve always dug those Rolex GMT-Master II watches, especially that “Root Beer” one. Man, that thing is sweet! But, you know, they’re crazy expensive. So, I thought, “Why not try to make something that kinda looks like it?”
First off, I started looking around online, checking out pictures of the real deal Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer”. I spent a good chunk of time just staring at all the details. You know, the bezel, the dial, the hands – all that good stuff. The black and rose gold color combo is just killer. I needed to figure out how I was gonna pull this off.
I found some reviews online. One from Amazon, people are talking about this Stuhrling brand, said it looks like the Rolex. I was never a fan of the yellow gold two tones, but the root beer is amazing. Good weight, nice. I started to think about maybe getting one of those and tweaking it, or finding parts that looked similar.
Next up, I needed to get my hands on some parts. I started searching for watch parts that had that same kind of vibe. For the bezel, I looked for something with that two-tone brown and black thing going on. It wasn’t easy, but I found a few that were pretty close. Finding a dial with the right color and those round hour markers was another challenge. I saw some real Rolex dials online – “maxi black dial with rose gold luminous round hour,” it said. Fancy! I knew I wouldn’t find the exact same thing, but I figured I could find something similar enough.
I also learned that there are lots of replicas of the GMT-Master II out there, even the “Root Beer” one. I’m not into fakes, but it gave me some ideas for where to look for parts.
After a lot of searching and comparing, I finally ordered some parts. When they arrived, I started messing around with them. I carefully took apart a cheap watch I had lying around – kind of a test run, you know? Then, I started trying to fit the new bezel and dial onto the watch case.

In the end, I managed to put together a watch that kinda, sorta resembles the Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer”. It’s definitely not the real thing, and it’s not perfect by any means. But, it’s got that same general look, and it was a fun project. Plus, it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg!
