Okay, so I saw this PRADA Symbole Tote Bag at the official flagship store and I was like, “I gotta have it!” But the price tag? Not so much. So, I thought, “Why not try to remake it myself?” It sounded like a fun project, and I was eager to give it a shot.
First things first, I studied the bag. I looked at a ton of pictures online, trying to get a good sense of its shape and design. It’s got these cool squared lines and a kind of modern vibe. I also noticed it’s made of this woven jacquard fabric, which seemed like the biggest challenge. I started researching where I could find similar material.
I spent a few days going to different fabric stores in my area. I was carrying printouts of the bag to compare the patterns. It was tough, but I finally found a fabric that was pretty close! It wasn’t an exact match, but it had a similar texture and feel. The color, though, was slightly off. This bag usually comes in black, but the fabric I found was more like dark brown. But hey, a little customization never hurts, right?
- Getting the materials: This was a whole adventure in itself. I needed the fabric, of course, but also some leather for the handles and trim, thread, and a few other bits and pieces. I ended up ordering most of the stuff online because I couldn’t find everything locally.
- Making the pattern: This was probably the trickiest part. I took some rough measurements from the pictures and tried to draft a pattern. I made a test version out of some scrap fabric first, just to make sure I was on the right track. It took a few tries to get it right.
- Cutting and sewing: Once I was happy with the pattern, I cut out the pieces from my chosen fabric and started sewing. I used my trusty old sewing machine, which has seen me through many projects. I double-stitched everything to make sure it was sturdy. The jacquard fabric was a bit tricky to work with, but I managed it.
The handles and trim were a bit easier since they were just leather. I cut them out and sewed them on. I even tried to mimic the “PRADA” logo by carefully placing and sewing. It’s not perfect, but it’s recognizable.
After a few weeks of on-and-off work, I finally finished it! It’s not an exact replica of the PRADA bag, especially because of the color of the fabric, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s got that same boxy shape and modern feel. Plus, I made it myself, which makes it even more special.
I’ve been using it for a few days now, and it’s surprisingly sturdy. I can fit all my usual stuff in it, and it’s comfortable to carry. I’ve even gotten a few compliments on it! People are surprised when I tell them I made it myself. They start to ask me how they can start making their own bags.
All in all, it was a fun and rewarding project. It was definitely challenging at times, but I learned a lot in the process. And now I have a unique bag that I love, and a story to tell. Who knows, maybe I’ll try to remake another designer bag in the future! It’s amazing what you can do with a little creativity and determination.
