OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Replica: Is The Classic Style Transparent Case Back Worth It

So, I’ve been messing around with watches lately, specifically the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. I really wanted that classic look but with a see-through back ’cause, you know, it’s cool to see the guts and all.

I did some digging and found out that getting a legit Omega Moonwatch with a transparent case back is, well, a bit of a pain. And honestly, the “replica” ones are just bad. They look okay from afar, but up close, it’s a whole different story. If you’ve ever seen a real one, you’d spot the fake ones in a second.

But then I stumbled upon this guy, Thomas Preik, who makes these sapphire case backs. I thought, “Why not?” and got myself one. It turns out, these things fit pretty much any Speedmaster. Pretty neat, huh?

Here’s what I did:

  • First, I got my hands on a standard Speedmaster Pro. I have the 311.30.42.30.01.006 model. It’s got the sapphire crystal on the dial, but the back was solid.
  • Then, I ordered one of those sapphire case backs from Thomas Preik.
  • Next, I carefully swapped out the original case back with the new sapphire one. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but I managed.

Now, I’ve got the best of both worlds—the classic Moonwatch look on the front and a cool view of the movement on the back.

I also heard about this Pagani Design PD-1701, which kinda looks like the Speedmaster. It’s not the real deal, but it’s not trying to be a straight-up copy either. Also, there’s this Bulova “Moon watch,” which I found is interesting. Might check that out sometime.

Another thing, about the real Speedmaster

From what I gathered, the Speedmaster Pro usually keeps its value pretty well, especially the old ones and the limited edition ones. They even get more valuable sometimes because they’re rare and people like collecting them.

The “Pro” is based on the first Moonwatch, and it’s a bit bigger than the other Speedmaster models. Each of those has its own thing going on.

Anyway, that’s my little watch adventure for now. It’s been fun, and I’m pretty happy with how my Speedmaster turned out.
