Okay, so, I saw this Prada Symbole tote bag online the other day, and I just fell in love with it. It’s got this cool, geometric pattern, and it looks super chic. I’m not usually one to splurge on designer bags, but this one, I don’t know, it just spoke to me. But the price tag? Ouch. So, I thought, “Why not try to make one myself?”
First, I spent hours, like, literally hours, just staring at pictures of the bag online. I zoomed in on every detail, trying to figure out how it was constructed. I noticed the bag has this enameled metal triangle logo. The bag itself seems to be made of leather, which I really digged into. And it’s got these rolled handles that look pretty sturdy.
Next, I went on a material hunt. I hit up a bunch of fabric and leather stores in my area. Found some decent white leather that I thought would work. I couldn’t find an exact match for the pattern, but honestly, who can copy Prada? I sketched that triangle pattern I adored onto the leather. I also found some gold-tone hardware that looked pretty similar to the original. For the lining, I opted for a simple jacquard fabric. Couldn’t find one with the Prada logo, obviously, but I found a plain, neutral-colored one that I thought would do the trick.
Then came the hard part: actually making the bag. I started by cutting out the leather pieces according to the measurements I had estimated. Now, I’m no sewing expert, but I have a sewing machine and I know how to use it, more or less. Sewing the leather was tough, let me tell you. It’s a lot thicker than regular fabric, so I had to go slow and be really careful.
- Cut the leather: I used a pattern I drafted based on the pictures.
- Sew the body: This was the most challenging part, as I had to make sure the pattern lined up.
- Attach the handles: I reinforced them with extra stitching, ’cause, you know, it needs to hold stuff.
- Add the lining: Hand-stitched this part to make it look neat.
- Attach the hardware: This was the fun part! Made it feel like a real “designer” bag.
Putting it all together was a real challenge. I had to unpick and redo some parts a couple of times. The handles were especially tricky. I wanted them to be strong enough to hold the weight of the bag’s contents, so I reinforced them with some extra stitching. I hand-stitched the lining to make it look neater. For the logo, I did try to mimic the enameled metal triangle, but settled with a simpler golden triangle I could sew on.
The Result
After many, many hours of work, I finally finished my DIY Prada Symbole tote! It’s not perfect, of course. There are some imperfections here and there, and it certainly doesn’t have that Prada finesse. But you know what? I’m super proud of it. It looks pretty darn good if I do say so myself. It’s got that same geometric vibe, and it’s definitely unique. Plus, I made it with my own two hands, which makes it even more special.
So, would I recommend trying to remake a Prada bag? Maybe not. It was a lot of work, and it’s definitely not the same as owning the real thing. But it was a fun project, and I learned a lot. And hey, now I have a one-of-a-kind bag that’s kind of inspired by Prada, but totally me.
